Medical home visits: who, why and how?

By Dr. Aurélia Nha-Huyen Nguyen Gouez, a family physician and medical director of French origin, based in Quebec since 2016.

In France, consulting your family doctor at home is still common practice, especially for the elderly or families with young children. In Quebec, this option remains little known... and yet, it can make all the difference. Since January 2024, our Allodocteur.ca clinic has been offering this service in Montreal, to make family medicine more accessible, faster and more humane.

Who are home visits for?

Home visits are for anyone who, for practical or medical reasons, has difficulty getting around:

-Seniors: frailty, mobility problems, convalescence after hospitalization.

-Young children: fever, ear infections, coughs, rashes... It's often easier for the doctor to come to the house.

-Immunosuppressed or vulnerable people: to reduce exposure to viruses in waiting rooms.

-Patients with anxiety disorders or psychological limitations.

-For large families or busy people: a precious time-saver.

-Post-hospital or post-operative follow-up.

Why choose a home visit?

-Comfort and peace of mind: you stay at home, in familiar surroundings.

-Less stress: no transport, no long waits.

-Direct observation of the living environment: this sometimes enables the doctor to adapt his advice (hygiene, autonomy, safety).

-Fast access to a doctor: at Allodocteur.ca, visits are often same-day.

-Quality of the relationship: home consultations are often more human and less expeditious.

How does it work?

At Allodocteur.ca, everything is designed to be quick and easy:

1.make an appointment: online on our website or by phone.

2.choice of time slot: according to your availability.

3On-site consultation: the doctor comes to the clinic with his medical equipment.

4Prescriptions, check-ups, work stoppages: everything is delivered on the spot or sent by secure e-mail.

5Follow-up: if necessary, a teleconsultation or second visit can be proposed.

Consultations are private (excluding RAMQ), starting at $279, depending on complexity and distance. An insurance receipt is provided with each consultation.

In conclusion

The home visit puts the patient at the heart of care. At Allodocteur.ca, we believe that offering this service means restoring the family doctor's local role, as in France.
